Government e-Marketplace(GeM) classifies sellers as either OEM or Resellers. OEM means ‘Original Equipment Manufacturer’, which, as the name suggests, refers to the manufacturer of a product. A ‘Reseller’ is a dealer or distributor who buys the product from an OEM and sells it at a higher price.

This classification was likely done to separate the OEM’s and Resellers on Government e-Marketplace in order to bring in higher transparency on prices. Obviously, the price quoted by an OEM will be lower on Government e-Marketplace(GeM) than the price for the same product quoted by a reseller.

Since Government buying is all about choosing the lowest bidder(L1), this makes the process much more easier for the buyer.

How Do You Register As An OEM/Reseller On Government e-Marketplace(GeM)?

While registering on Government e-Marketplace, if you are a Reseller, the process is relatively short.

For OEMs, the GeM registration is a bit longer, and they require documentary proof of brand ownership, proof of manufacturing, etc.

However, the big advantage of being registered as an OEM on Government e-Marketplace is that you get access to an OEM Panel for the categories in which you have been awarded OEM status. An OEM Panel forms a big part of our overall strategy for our clients with whom we work on Government e-Marketplace(GeM), but more on that in another post.

Suffice it to say, being registered as an OEM on GEM is something you should be very happy about.
